    Overview

    Welcome to BMSC 5400 Biomedical Stats, more specifically, the Experimental Design Theory and Application module. This module is the introductory module to the BMSC 5400 course and will provide you with the necessary understanding of the theory behind experimental design as well as its application. These skills will serve as the foundation for the experiments in which you design and execute as required by the BMSC 5400 course. 

    What You Will Learn

    This module was designed and integrated into the BMSC5400 as a response to feedback that was provided on ways to better prepare UNTHSC students. Over the next two weeks you will learn both the foundation of experimental design and practice applying experimental design principles.

    During the first week you will learn:

    • The purpose and concept of experimental design.
    • Experimental design theory.
    • The principles of experimental design.

    During the second week you will learn:

    • How to apply experimental design principles to provide solutions to scientific problems.
    • How to create and substantiate an hypothesis using experimental design principles

  • Week 1 (Experimental Design Theory)

    Week 1

    Your first week is designed to support your understanding of the key principles, processes, and theory which are the foundation for experimental design. This is an important time for you as a UNTHSC student,  this week will help you to design, prepare and execute effective experiments. It is important to note that in order to move on to the second week of this module a grade of 70% or better is required.

    Below you will find the specific learning objectives that should be mastered to ensure your success in this module, this course, and the UNTHSC program. You will also find the corresponding activities which will help you to process your learning and allow me to assess your understanding of experimental design.

    Week 1 Learning Goal:

    At the end of Week 1 students will be able to:

    Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of experimental design (Theory)

  • Week 2 (Experimental Design Application)

    Week 2

    Congratulations! You made it through what I know was a very intense week. Be proud and encouraged by the fact that the first week provided a strong foundation for which you to build upon as you work to better understand experimental design. This week you will take the theory that you learned last week and apply it to the experimental design process. Your ability to apply these experimental design principles and theories will be assessed this week as the major assignment will be a the development of an experiment that solves a "real world' problem. In order to pass this module you must earn a minimum of 70% on your experimental design project.
